Overview of the Tenure Clock

The Faculty Handbook provides guidance on the management of the tenure clock and opportunities for tenure clock relief. With two exceptions, the Provost may, at his or her discretion, grant a faculty member with tenure clock relief. In the case of a faculty leave, after receiving a leave request from the faculty member, tenure clock relief may be granted for one or two semesters of tenure clock relief, equal to the length of the leave.  The exceptions are:

  1. In the case of an approved parental leave, the faculty member is automatically eligible for up to one full year of tenure clock relief, subject to the faculty member's requesting it.

  2. In the case of an approved flexible work arrangement, the faculty member is automatically eligible for up to three months of tenure cloth relief, subject to the faculty member's requesting it.

Faculty on approved flexible work arrangements (FWAs) are eligible to receive up to three months of tenure clock relief. The faculty member must request this relief in writing when the FWA is requested. The Provost will grant tenure clock relief, if any, in writing.

Tenure clock requests that accompany a leave or FWA can be submitted in dFac. All other requests should be emailed to Faculty Affairs for provostial approval.

If no leave or flexible work arrangement is involved, the faculty member may still seek tenure clock relief for other extenuating circumstances.
