The administrative distinction between secondary and joint appointments is that secondary appointments do not involve any contribution to the faculty salary line; joint appointments do. This matter must be worked out between the Chair and the Dean (for interschool appointments, between the Deans and the Provost). Otherwise, the principles for secondary appointments are the same as for a joint appointment.
